The Australian actress is in negotiations to star in Grace of Monaco, set in the years following Kelly’s fairytale wedding to Prince Rainier III. She beat dozens of other contenders, according to Variety, the industry magazine, which reported that “nearly every top actress in Hollywood” had chased the role. The film will focus on the 1962 crisis in which Charles de Gaulle blockaded the tiny principality, angered by Monaco’s status as a tax haven for wealthy French subjects. Kelly’s behind-the-scenes diplomacy saved her adopted homeland from disaster, the film will claim. Regarded as one of the most beautiful Hollywood actresses of all time, Kelly was cast by Alfred Hitchcock in Dial M for Murder, Rear Window and To Catch A Thief, and made her last big screen appearance in High Society.
